Your Colorado Cannabis Career Starts with MED Badge

If you’re looking to break into Colorado’s flourishing cannabis industry, getting your MED Badge is the first place to begin. Think of your MED Badge like your driver’s license. You can’t legally drive without a driver’s license just like you can’t legally work in any Colorado business where THC product is grown, extracted, sold, or present without your MED Badge, which is officially known as your MED Employee License.

In fact, for just about any cannabis job out there, employers won’t consider applicants who don’t have a MED Badge. But unlike the DMV, getting this license is an easy and straightforward process. Here’s a quick overview of how it works:

  1. Make Sure You’re Eligible
  2. Complete & Sign Your Application
  3. Make an Appointment at a MED Office
  4. Bring Your Application & Fee Payment to Your Appointment

A Couple Things to Know Before You Go

While a Colorado MED Employee License is mandatory for any job that involves THC, it is not required for CBD-related work. It’s also good to know that in order to apply for your MED Employee License, you need to pay a $100 fee.

Step 1: Make Sure You’re Eligible

Before you apply for your MED Employee License, be sure you qualify. The first part is easy: You need to live in Colorado with a valid state ID. You also need to meet the following requirements:

  • Be at least 21 years old.
  • Have not served a felony in the last three years.
  • Are not a licensed physician making patient recommendations.
  • Have never had your authority to act as a primary caregiver revoked by the state.
  • Are not the spouse or child, living in the house with any employee of the MED.
  • Are not a police officer, sheriff, deputy sheriff, or prosecuting officer.
  • Are not an officer or employee of the marijuana state licensing authority or a local licensing authority.

Step 2: Complete and Sign Your Application

Like any job, cannabis requires some paperwork. Carve out some time to complete, sign and double-check your application to make sure you didn’t miss anything.

Pro Tip: Be sure to have your Social Security number handy.

The application can be found [here] on the Colorado official state website.

And while it can be tedious, we always recommend you check out the fine print. Spend some time reading the entire application to make sure you’re fully eligible to obtain a MED License before you commit to filling it out.

Step 3: Make an Appointment at a MED Office

After completing your application, you need to schedule an appointment at your nearest MED office. There are offices in Lakewood, Longmont, Colorado Springs, and Grand Junction.

If you’re heading to the Lakewood office, send an email to [email protected] to schedule an appointment.

For other locations, call the following numbers to schedule an appointment:

Colorado Springs: (719) 570-5622 Longmont: (303) 866-2274 Grand Junction: (970) 248-7181

Step 4: Bring Your Application & Fee Payment to Your Appointment

When you show up to your appointment, remember to bring your completed application and payment for the $100 application fee. You can pay with cash, check, or money order depending on the location.

Exact cash is accepted at the Lakewood office in addition to check, money order, or credit card. The other locations will accept checks or money orders made payable to the Colorado Department of Revenue (DOR).

Head’s Up: At your appointment, you’ll have your photo and fingerprints taken for state records after submitting all of your documentation.

Once all documentation is submitted, fees are paid, and the state completes a background check, you’re good to go. When you pass, you’ll receive your badge directly by mail.
