Biodynamic Farming Quality Assurance

Cultivation

Biodynamic farming is an approach to farming that incorporates holistic, ecological and ethical approaches to farming, gardening and nutrition. This type of farming utilizes natural fertilizers and soil enhancements like manure and minerals which doesn’t allow any room for chemical pesticides and artificial additives. Harmony is to be created between all the natural elements. This means planting and caring for compatible trees and plants, supporting beneficial wildlife and insects for pollination and natural pest control. This all includes but not limited to keeping livestock for supplying manure, rotating crops and composting to return nutrients to the environment.

Diversity is key to create an end result of robust and flavorful plants. However, depending on the natural elements can lead to a lack of consistency in the final product. Uncontrollable events like natural disasters, famine, diseases are all events that could lead to the inability to produce the exact same product as before or after. Given these uncertainties, how do you ensure quality assurance? How do you guarantee your customers will receive the same product and desired effects every time they purchase your product?

That is a really interesting set of questions and while I am not on the cultivation side, I will say that Durango Organics in Southern Colorado runs an operation that is as close as I have ever seen to what you describe (no chemical pesticides or artificial additives, use of natural insects for pest control, organic soil and nutrient mix etc) but in an indoor grow. Depending on your location, it may be worth checking out their operation for a way to try to incorporate as much of what you mention as possible while also maintaining an ability to guarantee product quality and effectiveness?
