How do I get my foot in the door to such an amazing industry?

Introduce Yourself

Hello Vangst community! My name is Peyton Kane and I recently moved from Florida out to Denver, Colorado. I graduated in May of 2020 with a bachelors degree in Finance and my dream has been to combine that education with the cannabis industry. I really enjoy working with numbers, finding weaknesses and opportunities with current business operations and LOVE making people happy. I have over 5 years of serving experience, including 2 at one of the busiest restaurants in SW Florida.

My question to you all is do you think a budtender position would be a good idea to learn about the industry hands-on as well as being able to network with different companies that they work with? Are there any set-backs that would come along with taking a position like this? And lastly, is there room for growth from that position to further my career in the industry?

Thank you guys so much I look forward to hearing opinions from someone in the industry!

Hi Peyton!!

What a great question and welcome to Colorado!

I think there are two answers to your question. Yes, starting from the ground up is a great way to learn the ends and outs of the industry, it is exactly what I did 7 years ago when I started out : )

However, now there is just a ton of readily available information and educational resources surrounding the industry, so I say looking for your ideal position using your financial background is also a totally viable option from the get-go! I just happen to work for the best damn recruiting agency in the nation, (shameless plug for Vangst here) so if I do come across anything in the financial/analytical area, I will most definently keep you in mind!

Cheers,

Shannon

Thank you Shannon!!

I really appreciate the advice! I cannot wait to get started in this amazing industry!

hey peyton,

a budtender job is a great way to get your foot in the door. You have to start somewhere and with your degree that will only help you progress that much faster. I have a business management degree and I got promoted at 6 months, but that's also here in Florida where it's still medical. In Colorado, you should have even more opportunities. Good luck and just keep applying!
