Responsibilities

What You’ll Be Doing ¨🦉 As a Principal Engineer you’ll be expected to lead technical discussions and decisions, as well as help coach and embody good engineering values. You’ll help us grow and scale our codebase and our team. We’re looking for someone who leads by example and is capable of owning what they work on. Day-to-day you’ll be coding, reviewing other people’s code, occasionally responding to and investigating bugs, and thinking about how to make things better.

As a Principal Engineer you’ll be responsible for ensuring that OKR level goals are aligned with our initiatives; for proposing technical changes and architectural changes that support better outcomes, or solve and support performance and scaling problems; play a central role in department, organizational and business strategy; and most importantly be able to see the future... jk - we just mean we’d like you to be able to see risks and dependencies and help us identify “icebergs” that may delay or cause a project to fail.

🦾 As a backend-focused engineer, you’ll be responsible for:
GraphQL API Various data-sync services managing data and various services that support the API Elasticsearch AWS / googleCloud services Heroku and some Dev-Ops as a service responsibilities Collaborating with Product and other Engineers to breakdown problems, and find appropriate tools and solutions to provide maximum business value. As a Principal engineer, you’ll also be in charge of making decisions that influence what we will work on going forward.

What you’ll be working with: 🧰 Our backend toolbox and ecosystem includes:

SQL (postgresql) Ruby on Rails GraphQL Ruby (various gems like GraphQL Batch) ActiveAdmin Github (and github project tools) Sendgrid Segment Hubspot Elasticsearch/Chewy Chargebee Various AWS tools (s3, cloudfront, sqs) Various Google tools (geolocation, places, jobs) and lots of SEO considerations. Heroku for deployment/pipeline mgmt

Experience

âś… You Must: Be a good person to work with. Have a minimum of 2 years of experience working with Ruby on Rails in a production setting. Have at least 7+ years of experience solving hard problems, and deploying production code. Speak to differences and tradeoffs in architectural decisions. Be able to refactor existing code and implement new patterns. Collaborate with Product and talk about feature tradeoffs and how technical decisions effect features. Be self-motivated and self-managing, with excellent organization and communication skills. Solve technical problems of high scope and complexity. Have experience with performance and optimization problems. Demonstrate ability to both diagnose and prevent problems. Help to progress and improve our processes and standards. Maintain and advocate for these standards through code review. Be a good person to work with (yup - twice).
